The Power of Intentionality: Why Leaders Must Grow on Purpose
Nathan had always been a diligent worker. As a mid-level manager at a marketing firm, he prided himself on putting in long hours, meeting deadlines, and ensuring his team stayed on track. But despite his dedication, his career had hit a plateau.
No promotions. No new responsibilities. No recognition.
He watched younger colleagues rise through the ranks while he remained in the same position for three years. Frustration gnawed at him, but he dismissed it. “I just need to work harder,” he told himself.
But deep down, he wondered: Why wasn’t hard work enough?
The Wake-Up Call
One day, Nathan’s CEO announced that the company would be sponsoring leadership training based on The 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth by John Maxwell. Seeing this as an opportunity, Nathan signed up, hoping to gain an edge in his career.
The very first session hit him hard.
“Growth doesn’t just happen. If you don’t take control of it, you’ll stay exactly where you are.“
It was like someone had put words to the frustration he had been feeling. He realized his biggest mistake: he had been working aimlessly, expecting growth to come naturally.
Recognizing His Flaws
Nathan took a hard look at himself and saw what had been holding him back:
🚩 Lack of Intentionality: He was reactive, not proactive. He worked hard but had no strategic direction for his growth.
🚩 Avoiding Leadership Skills: He focused on execution, not leadership. He never invested in learning how to influence, inspire, or strategize.
🚩 No Clear Goals: He had career aspirations but no concrete plan. His goals were vague—he wanted a promotion but had no roadmap to achieve it.
Taking Control of His Growth
Determined to break free from stagnation, Nathan applied what he learned in training. He created an Intentional Growth Plan with three key steps:
✅ Set SMART Goals: Instead of saying, “I want a promotion,” he set a goal: “I will develop leadership skills and position myself for a senior role within 12 months.”
✅ Invest in Learning: He committed to reading one leadership book per month, attending networking events, and enrolling in public speaking workshops.
✅ Seek Mentorship: He approached a senior executive and asked for guidance, something he had been too afraid to do before.
The hardest step was stepping outside his comfort zone. Speaking up in meetings, offering strategic suggestions, and networking felt unnatural at first. But every time he pushed through, he saw small wins—a manager praising his initiative, a colleague seeking his advice, a client impressed by his leadership.

Breakthrough and Transformation
Six months later, the CEO announced that a new department head was needed. For the first time, Nathan was considered.
His name came up not because he had worked longer hours, but because he had grown into a leader.
When he was offered the position, Nathan realized something powerful:
🚀 Growth isn’t accidental. It’s intentional.
