Say Less, Connect More: How Joy Became a Trusted Voice in Her Department
Joy prided herself on being thorough. As a mid-level manager in operations, she believed good leadership meant covering all the bases. Her emails were detailed, her team meetings packed with explanations, and her feedback well-researched.
But instead of clarity, her team felt overwhelmed.
Team members often asked for clarification—after reading her three-paragraph emails. Instructions were missed. Projects lagged. Even her director gently asked her to “tighten things up.”
Joy was confused. Wasn’t this what clear communication looked like?
Wake-Up Call: When More Words Make Less Sense
The turning point came during a team check-in when her direct report asked, “Joy, could you give us a quick version of what you mean before we dive into all the details?”
It hit her: her effort to be complete was actually clouding understanding.
Joy realized she wasn’t being unclear because she lacked information—she was unclear because she shared too much at once.
That moment was her wake-up call. She needed to shift from “explaining everything” to connecting with clarity.
The Shift: Clarity Through Communication Training
Joy joined a leadership communication course that included DISC communication tools, concise message frameworks, and email clarity strategies.
She discovered her natural tendency toward high “C” and “S” DISC styles—cautious, detailed, thoughtful—but often too passive and wordy when urgency or direction was needed.
With support from the training, Joy practiced:
📝 Chunking information using bullet points and headlines in her emails.
📝 Framing action items first—not at the end of long descriptions.
📝 Speaking with “bottom-line up front” techniques during meetings, especially when addressing more dominant “D” or expressive “I” personalities.
In just a few weeks, Joy’s team noticed the change. Emails were easier to follow. Meetings were shorter but more productive.
Instead of saying “Sorry to follow up again,” colleagues began saying, “Let’s ask Joy—she explains it best.”
She didn’t just become a better communicator. She became a trusted, go-to voice in her department—someone who brought calm, clarity, and connection into every exchange.
