Managing Up: How Dennis Communicated With the C-Suite With Confidence

Dennis was a sharp, detail-oriented department manager who knew his stuff. When it came to project updates, budget forecasts, or quarterly results, he came prepared—with spreadsheets, bullet points, and 15-slide decks.

But every time he presented to the executive team, he noticed a pattern:

❌ Impatient glances.
❌ Interrupted explanations.
❌ Requests to “just get to the point.”

He often left those meetings frustrated, wondering, “Don’t they care about the details?”

What Dennis didn’t realize was this: he was communicating how he liked to receive information—not how the C-suite needed it.

Wake-Up Call: When Executive Silence Isn’t Approval

During a coaching session with his VP, Dennis got honest feedback:

“You’re the most prepared person in the room, but your message gets lost. You’re giving us a manual when we need a headline.”

That feedback hit hard. Dennis prided himself on thoroughness, accuracy, and logic. But in trying to prove value, he was overwhelming instead of influencing.

The Shift: Speak Their Language

Through leadership coaching and DISC assessment, Dennis discovered his communication style: high C (Conscientious)—cautious, precise, analytical. While those traits made him an excellent operator, they could also slow him down in high-level conversations.

He learned to adapt his communication style to align with high D (Dominance) and high I (Influence) personalities in the C-suite:

📝 Start with the point—then offer context only if asked.
📝 Use visual summaries instead of dense data tables.
📝 Mirror executive pacing and tone.
📝 Frame updates in terms of business impact, not process.

Most importantly, he practiced confidence without justification—learning that clear, concise messages are often more credible than long explanations.

Now, Dennis enters boardroom meetings with a crisp one-pager. He leads with results. He anticipates questions but doesn’t drown his audience in detail.

And the difference? Executives started listening—and inviting him back.

He wasn’t just seen as “the numbers guy” anymore. He was seen as a strategic partner.

By learning to manage up, Dennis unlocked influence far beyond his department.
